What is DanZan Ryu Jujitsu and DZR USA?
Origins of Danzan Ryu Jujitsu
We are a martial arts organization dedicated to the preservation and propagation of the art of Danzan Ryu Jujitsu also known as DZR.
Danzan Ryu Jujitsu is a comprehensive system of jujitsu founded in the 1920s by Professor Henry S. Okazaki, a Japanese-American martial artist in Hawaii. "Danzan" is the Japanese way to say “Sandalwood Mountain” which was a name for Hawaii (檀山).
DZR integrates traditional Japanese jujitsu with elements from other arts like Judo, Hawaiian Lua, Filipino Escrima, Chinese Kung Fu, Okinawan Karate, American boxing and wrestling. A co-equal branch of DZR is the healing art called seifukujitsu, comprised of various healing styles, making it one of the most complete martial arts systems in the world.
Origins of DZR USA
We wanted to develop an organization that promoted the unique system that is Danzan Ryu, that’s why DZR is in our name. However, in the spirit of Ohana, we are open to any martial arts school or organization that promotes the completion and perfection of character as outlined in Professor Okazaki’s Esoteric Principles.
